Online porn is damaging to relationships

b2ap3_thumbnail_guyAtComputer2.jpgIndividuals who watch porn on a regular basis may be putting their relationship with their other halves under unnecessary strain, the findings from a recent survey of sex experts have suggested.

According to a study conducted by Cosmopolitan magazine, some couples are experiencing problems with their romance as a result of a growing desire among young men to watch adult films on the internet.

Some 86 per cent of therapists questioned by the publication said they believe porn is having a negative effect on relationships, due to the fact it is now so easily accessible.

As a result of this, 94 per cent of experts claimed they have seen a rise in cases of porn addiction, while 63 per cent believe porn increases men's expectations of sex with their partner. Analysts found that an increasing number of men are suffering from performance anxiety because they are comparing themselves to those shown in blue movies and their partners feel insecure about the way they look and feel pressured to play the part.

This has resulted in the issue becoming such a problem for some that 85 per cent of experts questioned think porn is having a negative impact on women's self-esteem.

Furthermore, some 67 per cent of therapists believe women are put under pressure in the bedroom. Commenting on the study's findings, psychosexual therapist Karen Lobb-Rossini said: "More and more young people (girls as well as boys) are learning about sex through porn, and it's having a devastating effect on their perception of themselves and their bodies."

However, the survey's findings have been met with some criticism by other people arguing the research has done little to examine the actual effect pornography can have on relationships and mentality.

Writing in the Daily Telegraph, Dr Brooke Maganti - who wrote the award-winning anonymous blog Belle de Jour: Diary of a London Call Girl - said many couples are simply self-diagnosing their problems with help from the internet.
