Dysthymia is a milder, more chronic form of depression. In order for this diagnosis to be made, a person would need to have had a continuous depressed mood for at least two years. Dysthymia does tend to develop early in life, and unfortunately, people with this type of depression may believe that this is their normal mood, and that this long-lasting, mild depression is just part of their personality As such, dysthymia may go unnoticed and untreated.
Depression symptoms for people with dysthymia generally experience little or no joy in their lives, and may be unable to remember a time when they did feel motivated, excited or happy. Someone with dysthymia may tend to be inactive, withdrawn, self-critical and worry a lot. More symptoms of depression include poor self-esteem, difficulties concentrating or making decisions, disturbances in sleeping, and feelings of guilt, irritability, and sluggishness.
Dysthymia may be experienced as a kind of ‘existential angst' - as a continual dissatisfaction or lack of meaning in life.
For children, the duration of symptoms needs to be only one year, and a child's mood may be irritable rather than sad or depressed. Early treatment for depression is particularly important in the case of children and adolescents, as this may help avoid more serious mood disorders and possible substance abuse later in life.
