Anxiety is a normal bodily response to stress or danger, helpful at times in preparing the body for action, or in improving performance in a range of different situations. However, when anxiety is experienced intensely and persistently, it can become a problem and begin to interfere with a person's daily life. Anxiety can be one of the most distressing emotions that people feel. The term "Anxiety" describes a number of different problems, although a subjective experience of distress with accompanying disturbances of sleep, concentration, social anxiety and/or occupational functioning are common anxiety symptoms in many of the different anxiety disorders.
Anxiety affects our physical reactions, thoughts, behaviours and moods. Most people who are anxious are very aware of the physical symptoms of anxiety, which can include jitteriness, tension, increased heart rate, difficulty breathing and sweaty palms. The physical, behavioural and thinking changes that we experience when anxious are part of a "fight, flight, or freeze" response. These responses can be adaptive when we face actual physical threat or danger (if we were about to be robbed, for example). However, we can also experience these responses in situations in which they are not so helpful, where there is no physical threat, and in which too much anxiety can interfere with our ability to function and cope, (e.g. when standing in front of a large group of people about to give a presentation).
An anxiety disorder may make you feel anxious most of the time, without any apparent reason. Or the anxious feelings may be so uncomfortable that you stop some everyday activities to avoid them. Or you may have occasional bouts of anxiety so intense that they terrify and immobilise you.
Sometimes excessive anxiety or any of the conditions described below can be caused by a general medical condition, a prescribed medication, or alcohol or other substances, as such. It is vitally important to seek professional help if you think that you may be suffering from any of the disorders described here. Life Works have highly skilled professionals and are able to provide treatment for overcoming anxiety.
