Bipolar disorder (also known as manic depression) is a marked by extreme changes in mood, thought, energy and behaviour. It has the name ‘bi-polar' due to the fact that a person's mood alternates between two emotional extremes, or poles: the low of depression and the high of mania. The change in mood can be quite short (a matter of hours or days) or much longer (weeks or even months), and between these emotional swings, there are periods when the person's mood is quite normal. It is the severity of the mood swings, and the way that they interfere with normal life activities that distinguishes bipolar depression from ordinary mood changes.
In the depressed phase of bipolar illness, the depression symptoms are the same as those of a major depressive disorder. The depressive episodes can often be severe. In the manic phase, a person experiences mood that is extremely expansive, elevated or irritable. When in a manic phase, one's normal judgment can become seriously impaired, and there can be reckless or inappropriate behaviour such as excessive spending sprees or having promiscuous sex. It is even possible to lose touch with reality.
