Alcohol Detox at Home

It is not easy to do an alcohol detox at home for several reasons.  As the withdrawal symptoms set in (nausea, tremors, sweats, craving for alcohol, anxiety) it is easy to resort to top-ups of  alcohol to prevent these symptoms.  If you can remain abstinent the withdrawal may be very unpleasant and even dangerous, and once again there is the temptation to have a drink to alleviate the symptoms.  In any event it would be very inadvisable to attempt a home detox without a friend or relative present in case of problems.

In a residential treatment centre such as Lifeworks Community your withdrawal from alcohol can be achieved in a safe and supported way, thereby helping to prevent seizures, preventing or treating Wernicke’s encephalopathy with thiamine tablets, minimising injury to oneself and others, preventing dehydration, avoiding nutritional disorders, and helping to prevent complications due to underlying illness.  The other advantage is that a residential programme is very effective in learning to stay off the alcohol.
