Eating disorders are incredibly serious. Many people fail to understand how serious eating disorders can be, and how much damage these disorders can be. It can be incredibly hard to break an eating disorder, and can be even harder to break for those who attempt to do it on their own. Treatment for eating disorders is incredibly important for those who are serious about overcoming the problem.

Understanding Eating Disorders

Trying to understand eating disorders is incredibly important for those who are attempting to help those who have them, and those who are trying to get over them. The most important thing to understand is that eating disorders are completely mental. While it is a physical act, and it does affect you physically, the entire eating disorder is in the mind.  Body image issues will arise with eating disorders. Unhealthy relationships with food will come about because of these eating disorders. Without attempting to fix the psychological aspect, it is impossible to get over the eating disorder.

Types of Eating Disorders

There are multiple types of eating disorders that can require treatment. Nearly every type of eating disorder can benefit from having actual treatment. Anorexia and bulimia are two types of eating disorders that are incredibly difficult to overcome without treatment. The psychological effects for these disorders make it difficult to get back into a normal routine. Eating disorders such as overeating and binge eating are also difficult to overcome without treatment, as the psychological and emotional connection to food can need treatment to change.

How to Choose Eating Disorder Treatment

Different types of eating disorder treatments will be better than others, as not every type of treatment will work best for every individual. Those who wish to get over eating disorders with the help of treatment should do a few things. First, they need to understand what their issue is. If they can understand their issue, they can understand what types of treatment may be best; if there is a strong psychological connection to the eating disorder, a holistic approach to an eating disorder is best. After you understand that aspect of treatment, you need to think about what type of treatment is best for you. There are some who thrive in a group environment, and will make the biggest strides in improvement around others. There are others who need to make sure that they are on their own, however, and are working with the treatment staff on a complete one on one basis. Both types of eating disorder treatments are available through Life Works.

Types of Treatment for Eating Disorders

Many people think that all types of eating disorder treatment are the same. This couldn’t be farther from the truth. While each individually case is examined to create a unique treatment plan for each person, there are two major types of treatment.

Private Treatment

Private treatment is the best kind of treatment for people who do not work well in group settings. This type of treatment is based completely on one-on-one help from multiple staff members. These staff members will work with the patient both physically and psychologically in an attempt to help them get over their eating disorder. There will be chefs, nutritionists, psychologists, and various other certified staff members who will work with each individual to ensure that they are on the path to success.

Group Treatment

Others are more likely to thrive and be successful in a group therapy treatment setting. While each individual will have a specifically tailored program to their needs, they will go through much of the treatment with others who are suffering from the same types of eating disorders. This group setting allows people to become successful by giving them a support system of others who have the same issues. For many, going through the process with someone who is struggling with the same issues is the best way to get complete success through treatment.

Treatment for Anorexia and Bulimia

Anorexia and bulimia are two of the disorders that need the most treatment. Those who suffer from anorexia will need treatment that is different than the treatment for those who suffer from bulimia. The best way to actually tackle these eating disorders is to have a completely individually tailored treatment program that focuses on your needs and your specific disorder.

Treatment for Anorexia

Treatment for anorexia comes in different steps and stages. The first thing that needs to be taken care of for those who have anorexia (especially those with severe cases of anorexia) is weight gain. The body needs to return to a healthy weight for treatment to have the full effect; the body and mind will be affected. This weight gain is incredibly difficult for those who have anorexia; this process is a slow and gradual process to get their body to accept the food, and is why anorexia treatment is so important.

The following treatment steps for anorexia treatment revolve around the psychological state of the disorder. Anorexia takes a severe toll on the psyche, meaning that anyone with the issue needs to repair their mind to be able to live a normal life. Their body image issues must be solved through psychotherapy. Their

Treatment for Bulimia

The treatment for bulimia is two fold. First, like anorexia, the body needs to regain weight. The weight lost by purging the food after eating can cause serious issues to the body, which can include organ failure, including heart failure. After these issues are solved, however, there is more work to be done. Both the mind and the body must be worked with to train them both to accept food. Many people with bulimia have a difficult time with actually keeping food down, as they have taught themselves to purge the food soon after. If they do not purge, they can feel horrible, both physically and emotionally. This is why the psychological portion of the bulimia treatment is just as important, if not more important, than any other aspect of treatment.
