Alcohol detox is the sudden cessation of alcohol consumption by a person with alcohol dependence.
The abrupt stopping of alcohol consumption can cause mild symptoms in individuals who suffer from alcohol abuse but not true dependence, including mild shaking, dizziness, headaches and mild nausea. Some alcoholics suffer from severe alcohol withdrawal symptoms including, profuse sweating, tremors, hallucinations, nausea, vomiting, paranoia, delirium tremens and in some cases, withdrawal seizures. Such severe symptoms usually occur in alcoholics with a high level of dependence on alcohol.
Because of the potential for severe withdrawal symptoms in highly addicted alcoholics, alcohol detox is usually performed in a hospital or other inpatient clinic where they can be closely monitored by the appropriate professional counsellors. Patients are monitored by health care professionals to ensure that toxins leave the body safely and that withdrawal symptoms are well managed. Severe alcohol detox withdrawal symptoms can result in death,so it is important that alcohol detox is only attempted in the presence of qualified medical professionals.
People that are going through alcohol detox may feel irritable, paranoid and fatigued. They may have trouble sleeping and begin to suffer from delusions. Alcohol detox isn't a procedure that should be undertaken lightly. The alcohol detox procedure can make or break a recovery plan.
Once the alcohol detox procedure is complete, alcoholics have a greater chance of effectively participating in an alcohol abstinence recovery programme. Alcoholics that do not participate in a controlled, effective alcohol detox programme are unlikely to stay with an abstinence based alcohol recovery programme and will likely continue to consume alcohol in excessive amounts.
The first step to kicking an alcohol addiction is to go through an alcohol detox programme. There is a Life Works Out Patient center centrally located in London. The London facility offers an Intensive Evening Programme as well as different counselling options. The Intensive Evening Programme is perfect for people who have a hard time committing to a treatment program because of family and work commitments.
The Life Works Intensive Evening Program in London is an eight week programme with group meetings three times a week and an individual session once a week. This programme is based on the popular 12 step programme that has been adjusted to address any underlying issues that may be exacerbating the alcohol addiction such as family problems, emotional trauma and other unresolved mental issues.
If an individual must be detoxed, Life Works tries to make the process as comfortable as possible in a safe, controlled environment. There will be plenty of support for anyone going through the detox process. Clients are given a nutrition programme that is personalised to provide maximum nutritional support. A good, stable diet will improve over all health and will encourge the client to particiapte in good self care practices.
The structured group programme is not a one size fits all approach to alcohol detox. It is a customized individual plan designed to deliver maximum benefit to the individual. Some of the topics that are covered in the Intensive Evening Programme are Managing Carvings, The Addictive System, Recognising and Managing Feelings (including Anxiety Management & Anger Management), Relapse Prevention, Stages of Recovery, Steps One, Two & Three, Co-dependency - Core Symptoms, and ‘Family of Origin' Dynamics.
Intensive Evening Programme sessions are on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 6pm to 9pm. The sessions consist of a structured psycho-educational, problem-solving or assignment group workshop and is followed by a session with a therapy group. A dinner break is allowed between the two programme sessions.
The programme also features weekly family sessions to help make sure that clients have the full support of family and friends during the alcohol detox process.
In addition to multiple meetings, clients will have to complete assignments between sessions. These assignments will be presented during the group sessions. Clients will also be expected to attend what ever 12 step programme meetings are most appropriate. After the initial eight week programme is completed, clients have the option to attend weekly follow up sessions for a period of one year. This period will provide ongoing support.
Personalised individual counseling is also available in the central London out patient clinic. Counsellors are available to assist in developing coping skills for handling life crises or specific emotional health problems. Individual counselling can also help alcoholics gain insight into their destructive behaviour patterns. Clients may choose to participate in individual counselling before entering into the Intensive Evening Programme or they may choose to participate as part of an after care programme.
Individual counselling can prove invaluable to a recovering addict and can be helpful at any point in the addiction recovery process. It can help clients learn to manage difficult feelings, cope with every day life stress. And can help treat underlying issues that contribute to alcohol dependence, such as anxiety, panic attacks, depression, phobias or obsessive thought patterns. If an alcoholic has other issues, it is important to address those issues during treatment for alcoholic addiction. Without treating the underlying emotional issues that can exacerbate alcohol dependence, it is unlikely that any alcohol detox program will be successful. All Life Works counsellors have many years of professional experience and are registered with the BACP.
Alcohol detox is a difficult thing to go through and it can be made even more difficult if an alcoholic finds him or herself in a programme that is not suitable for his or her needs, financial situation or lifestyle. It is important to do research to find the right alcohol detox in the London area. Finding the right alcohol detox plan can make the difference between a successful alcohol recovery plan and a relapse and a continued downward spiral. Life Works has proven methods to help recovering alcoholics break free from the hold alcohol has on their lives.
