More information on Individual Counselling

Individual counselling at Life Works may be helpful for the following issues:

  • Addictive processes: Alcohol, illegal & prescribed drugs, gambling, debting, sexual compulsivity, co-dependence / relationship addiction, eating disorders.
  • Life crises: Bereavement, family / relationship problems, work-related stress, recent or past traumatic experiences.
  • Mental health problems: Depression, anxiety, panic reactions, phobias, obsessive thought patterns.

The counselling process can improve one's ability to:

  • cope with common life stresses,
  • manage difficult feelings,
  • identify and change unhealthy coping mechanisms,
  • relate to self and others.

In undertaking these tasks, connections between one's inner and outer worlds will often be made. There may also be increased awareness of how one's current pattern of functioning and relating may be influenced by past events still alive in the present.

Dependant on the issues being presented, and the individual's goals, the counselling offered can be either short-term and goal-oriented; or longer-term, open-ended and more exploratory. An initial assessment is conducted at which treatment recommendations are made, and the purpose and goals of the counselling discussed.

Life Works therapists are qualified to Advanced Diploma or Master's Degree level, have many years of professional counselling experience, and are registered with BACP.
