'Little Voice'

I arrived at Lifeworks near the beginning of 2004, confused and terrified.  Although sober for many years, another addiction had just landed me in trouble with the law and life seemed untenable.  The calm, quiet, safe, atmosphere of Lifeworks was very soothing and the staff enabled me to understand the process of dual addiction and how my memories and brain chemistry lead me to where I was that day. By understanding this and seeing what I had to do to change was a huge step in my recovery.

Life Works helped me deal with and understand my family of origin issues and to see the past for what it was enabling me to let go of it and move on.  After several months I left that safe haven, having received a great deal of love and support and expert counseling.

I'd known for a long time that intimacy in relationships was not my strong suit and I'd found out at Lifeworks that my ability to ask for my needs to be met was poor.  Hence a lifetime of running away into addiction whenever the going got tough.  Now I was going to try a new way: face the fear and do it anyway.

It took me well over a year to summon up the courage to start dating again.  Eventually I met a person with whom I clicked and over the next few months, with lots of serenity prayers and support from fellowship friends, was able to tell her who I was. No secrets.  Far from driving her away, it drew us closer and recently we spent our honeymoon in Paris.

While shopping in Paris, my new wife noticed that I stood quietly while she sifted through the clothes on display.  At first she was annoyed, then realising that I had spent a lifetime thinking that I wasn't allowed to express an opinion, she gently told me that ‘Little Voice’ was positively welcome to contribute to the shopping expedition with suggestions and encouragement for her to try things on…

The work I did at Life Works stills plays a vital role in my recovery today, I carry with me the things I learnt there and use them regularly.
