This process is key to our treatment approach. Specific traumatic events or cumulative trauma all play a central role in triggering an addiction or behavioural health issue. Stabilising the effect of these experiences is not about reliving the original trauma but building internal self-soothing structures and integrating new coping skills. By working with the body's response to the trauma and enabling the patient to feel in control of these responses, the patient feels safe and able to engage with treatment and recovery. The importance of stabilisation protocols is that no therapeutic work can be done until the client is able to confidently manage his or her own trauma reaction on a daily basis.
