Advice on what you can do about your problem with heroin addiction

  • Understand that while you made the choice to start taking heroin, you did not choose to become a heroin addict. heroin forces an addict's brain into functioning abnormally. The drug takes the place of everything else that made you happy and becomes overwhelming. We know that heroin addiction is an illness, not a character flaw – and as such, you need and deserve the same medical treatment that anyone else with a chronic illness would receive.
  • The best treatment programs, like those at Life Works, look beyond the symptoms of heroin addiction. An effective programme will look at your behaviours around heroin but importantly, it will also examine and address the underlying psychological factors that influence these behaviours. Heroin addiction is not just about the drug– it is a life-threatening, psychiatric illness that is much more serious than just the need to use.
  • Find a treatment programme, such as the one at Life Works, that includes assessment and treatment for any other pre-existing or co-occurring conditions. This includes mental health issues, behavioural health issues or mood disorders - for example, anxiety or depression – that may also be affecting you. These issues often exist alongside a person’s heroin addiction and if left untreated, they can impair the effectiveness of treatment, so it’s essential that they are identified and addressed as part of your heroin addiction treatment programme.
