Advice on what you can do about your problem with bulimia

  • While you made the choice to start bingeing or purging, you did not choose to become bulimic. When you are bulimic, yourbody image becomes distorted and you begine to view your own body as something to be ashamed of. We know that bulimia is an illness, not a sign of weakness or problem with who you are as a person – and as such, you need and deserve the same medical treatment that anyone else with a chronic illness would receive.
  • Bulimia is more than just a combination of symptoms. It is important to find a treatment centre like Life Works that looks beyond your eating behaviours. The best programs will look at your behaviours around food but importantly, they will also examine and address the underlying psychological factors that influence these behaviours.
  • Make sure the treatment program you choose includes assessment and treatment for any other pre-existing or co-occurring mental health issues, behavioral health issues or mood disorders - for example, anorexia or depression – that may also be affecting you. These issues often exist alongside a person’s bulimia and if left untreated, they can impair the effectiveness of treatment, so it’s essential that they are identified and addressed as part of your treatment programme.
