Professional Training

Relapse Prevention

Presented by Terence Gorski

This two day advanced clinical skills training workshop will review how to identify and manage high risk situations that can cause recovering people to start using alcohol and other drugs in spite of their previous commitment not to. Specific exercises for defining, identifying and managing high risk situations will be presented along with exercises for integrating high risk situation management with the most advanced cognitive behavioural therapy techniques.

Upon completion of this session the participants will be able to:

1. Write an individualized brief treatment plan for Relapse Prevention Counseling (RPC).
2. Motivate clients to make an initial abstinence contract.
3. Develop a plan to stop alcohol and drug use quickly should it occur.
4. Identify the immediate high risk situations that can cause clients to use alcohol and drugs in spite of the initial abstinence contract.
5. Write personal titles and descriptions that make these high risk situations easy to understand, anticipate, and recognize.
6. Objectively describe (map) past high risk situations that were managed in a way that led to alcohol or drug use.
7. Identify the thoughts, feelings, urges, actions, and relationship patterns (TFUAR's) that caused clients to alcohol or drug use to manage high risk situations.
8. Manage high risk thoughts and feelings that cause clients to alcohol or drug use to manage high risk situations.
9. Prepare to manage future high risk situations without using alcohol and drugs.
10. Develop a recovery plan that supports the identification and management of high risk situations.
11. Develop an action plan for adapting RPC methods to their personal clinical style, the needs of their treatment program, and the individual needs of their clients.
