Gay Men, Lesbians, Bisexuals and Transgender in Recovery

Presented by Joseph Amico

Sexual Minorities (Gays, Lesbians, Bisexuals, and Transgenders) suffer from various types of shame. Nothing drives addiction more than shame, thus making GLBT folks candidates for addictive behaviours. Growing up different in a heterosexist society produces shame because we don't fit in and live up to other's expectations. Use of drugs, alcohol, sex, compulsive spending, eating disorders and gambling are all choices GLBT folks make to cope with shame. Shame is compounded by physical, sexual, emotional and religious abuse.

This workshop will explore:

- Coming out issues and how they impact compulsive behaviour
- Understanding where shame comes from
- How sex and love get confused as intimacy

This will include:

- Discussion of shame due to heterosexism
- Healing from shame due to addiction
- Shame due to HIV status
- How Religions of Origin can contribute to
- Spiritual Abuse
- How to recover from Spiritual Abuse to workthe 12 Step Program
- When is it ok to start dating or having healthy sex in recovery
