How to reduce your alcohol consumption in the New Year

If you’re worried about how much alcohol you have consumed over the holidays, below are some great ways to help stay on top of how much you’re consuming.

  • Set targets - participate in events such as Dry January, or make a New Year’s resolution to give yourself something to aim for.
  • Dilute your drinking - When you do go out, alternate between an alcoholic drink and a soft drink.
  • Go sober with a friend - Ask around your group of friends for a cutting back partner and you can stay sober together on nights out.
  • Don’t buy rounds - it means keeping pace with the fastest drinker in the group and you’re also committed to a certain amount of drinks. You may find yourself drinking more than you would like this way.
  • Fill your glass up with soft drinks - Ask for a wine spritzer or single spirits with a lot of mixer in, and fill the glass to the top with mixer, to dilute your alcohol intake.
  • Involve food - encourage friends to socialise in restaurants as opposed to pubs or bars to prevent the sole purpose of evenings being drinking.
  • Keep track of how much you’re drinking - keeping track of each drink can make you more aware and help encourage you to stick to a target expenditure or amount of drinks.
  • Don’t be tempted to double up - pubs, clubs and restaurants will try to upsell to increase their profits. Stick to half pints, small glasses of wine and single measures of spirits.
  • Don’t keep alcohol in the house - drinking at home is becoming increasingly popular. It is easier to drink often when it is always there, so cut it out.
