Is the use of modern technology making us lonely?

The evolution of modern technology, the internet and social media channels has allowed us to become more connected to friends and family than ever; yet for some, the negatives of this are starting to outweigh the benefits.

In a recent article posted on MSN, Steve Clarke, Clinical and Therapy Services Manager at Life Works in Woking, discusses how the “distortion” associated with social media could actually be having a negative effect on our well-being, linking this to low mood and loneliness. Steve says, “Since loneliness is linked to a myriad of mental health problems, getting real social interaction is far more important. ‘Virtual’ friend time doesn’t have the same therapeutic effect as time spent physically with real friends.”
