Keeping Yourself Mentally Healthy

mental healthMental health conditions may be more prevalent in today’s society than ever before but this doesn’t mean that we can’t do anything about it. Below we have highlighted a few simple life changes that can have a huge impact on mental health and overall wellbeing.

Talk - whether it’s because we’re too busy with work and other commitments or we’re just not very good at talking about our feelings, most of us are guilty of bottling up more than we should. Talking about the things that are causing stress and anxiety can help us stay in good mental health however so if you’re feeling a bit down in the dumps, arranging to meet a friend for a drink and a good old moan can make you feel a million times better.

Eat well - research has showed that there are strong links between what we eat and how we feel. A diet high in sugar and low in nutrients can leave us feeling tired, lethargic and frustrated - all of which can have a negative impact on our mental health. Eating a balanced and nutritious diet however will leave you feeling physically and mentally alert which makes it much easier to cope with the stresses of everyday life.

Keep in touch - it seems crazy that in a world where emails, videos and social media have made it easier than ever to communicate with friends and family that we actually make less of an effort. These are the people who really care about us however and they can make you feel valued and cared for. They can also help solve problems, offer different perspectives and provide a good shoulder to cry on. So the next time you’re sat on the sofa checking Facebook for the 20th time that day, pick up the phone and give a loved one a surprise phone call.

Take a break - when life’s busy it’s very easy to fall into the ‘all work and no play’ routine. This can have a hugely negative impact on our mental health because as well as being incredibly stressful, we lose sense of who we are and never get a chance to actually enjoy life. Whether it’s taking a lunch break at work for the first time since you can remember, spending a night in front of the TV on your own, meeting friends for dinner or going away for a weekend - it’s important to set aside quality time that does not involve working.

Keep active - those health experts can’t stop telling us about the physical and mental benefits that being active can provide. Unless you’re a keen runner or regular gym-goer this probably isn’t what you want to hear but exercise does produce endorphins which believe it or not, do make us feel great. Some even better news is that ANY physical exercise is beneficial regardless of whether you’re running a marathon or taking a nice leisurely stroll around the local park.
