Step 12 of the 12 steps to sobriety by Jamie Moon.So I’m saying, “Step Twelve is NOT just about service.” Well you might say that yeah you know that, it’s also about practicing principles to recover from alcohol or other addictions. I certainly couldn’t argue with that but what principles are we practicing? The Step says, “Having had a spiritual awakening as the result of working these Steps, we tried to carry this message to (blank), and to practice these principles in all our affairs.” Firstly I’d like to suggest that a spiritual awakening is not the result of these Steps. It is a result of these Steps. Therefore I would have written it with a instead of the.
Well for instance yes I have had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps. But I have gotten so much more. These Steps have assisted me in re-writing my history. My his-story is now just that my-story. I no longer live out of the past; out of past decisions I made when I was not old enough to really understand the results of such decisions. So, yes I am spiritually more fit than ever, but I am also more psychologically better. Being better psychologically better, my relationships are better. You see I see the Steps as healing three relationships in my life.
Firstly, it heals my relationship with other people; which make an opening for a relationship with God; which heals my relationship with me. So again I say, a spiritual awakening is a not the result of these Steps. And without a doubt there is no way to have one without the others. I once asked my Sponsor how I can tell how well I am spiritually. He said, “All you have to do is to look at all the people in your life past and present—and the one that you are the furthest from—that is how far you are from your Higher Power.”
So, for me, the healing of relationships is the most important result of the Twelve Steps. Without that we are completely incapable of a decent relationship with God. And psychologically, without me taking control of my ego-mind, I also will not be able to have any kind of relationship with people or God. So, to be psychologically fit is vital to both a Spiritual Awakening and any relationship with me.
About “practicing these principles in all our affairs?” Well, that is I think a topic for my next article. Oh, and I won’t forget to have a conversation about service.
