What is an addiction?
An addiction can be defined as an individual repeatedly and uncontrollably taking, using or doing something, despite the harm that this causes. This harmful activity, whether it involves a substance or a particular behaviour, is repeated because it results in pleasurable or valuable outcomes for the individual, which ultimately causes them to develop an emotional and/or physical dependence on the activity in question. Addictions can have a profoundly negative effect on all areas of a person’s life and can result in a broad range of long-term physical and psychological problems.
